Incidence and Prevalence of Somatization Disorder
According to a study conducted in Belgium, somatization disorder is the third highest psychiatric disorder in the world next to depression and anxiety disorders. It has an international prevalence rate of 8.9%. Although on their own, they do not increase the possibility of death, there is evidence that somatization disorders are associated with greater risk for suicide attempts.
In majority of somatoform disorder cases, the prevalence in females is greater than the male with a 10:1 ratio. It has its onset in childhood, early adulthood, and adolescence.
