What Causes Sexual Addiction?

The causes of sexual addiction may involve a complex number of factors that may include the following: 3

  • Brain Abnormalities
    • This may be due to some diseases that could cause damage to the brain, such as multiple sclerosis, dementia and epilepsy which are commonly associated with compulsive sexual behavior.
  • Sex Hormone
    • How the sex hormone androgen can trigger sexual addiction remains to be unclear, but it can contribute to the manifestation of sexual addiction symptoms.
  • Natural Brain Chemicals
    • The brain’s neurotransmitter serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine all play vital role in sexual functions; however their exact mechanism to promote sexual addiction remains to be unclear.
  • Changes in brain circuits
    • Overtime, sexual addiction can often change the brain’s neural circuit, which involves the communication of the brain cells, that may cause pleasant physiological reactions when one engages in sexual behavior and the opposite occurs when such behavior is stopped.

Possible risk factors that can lead to sexual addiction involve the following:

  • History of severe family dysfunction and violence
  • Emotional, physical and sexual abuse
  • Lack of family support
  • Failure to meet emotional needs by the family
  • Drug addiction
  • Gambling
  • Unhealthy coping mechanisms
  • Psychological disorders
  • Psychological distress during childhood
  • Drug induced sexual behavior
  • Family history of addiction

Sexual addiction is often associated with other addictions due to the resemblance of the common causes of the disorders such as: 4

  • Similarity in brain chemistry changes
  • Family background of addiction
  • Multiple addictions co-exist
  • Lack of nurturing
  • Presence of emotional, sexual and physical trauma during childhood.
