Statistics on Separation Anxiety Disorder

  • According to the National Comorbidity Survey of U.S. households, separation anxiety in children and adults were placed at 4.1% and 6.6%, respectively.
  • One-third of the participants (36.1%) experienced the condition until adulthood while 77.5% first encountered the condition during their adulthood. 10
  • Separation anxiety disorder is prevalent in 1.3% of children aged 14-16 years old and in 1.4% of children aged 7-11 years old. It has an average prevalence of 2.4%.
  • In 1987, Burke recorded that 5% of school-aged children were reluctant to attend school. The mean age for the onset of separation anxiety disorder is 7.5 years old, while school refusal is 10.3 years old.
  • Among young children, separation anxiety disorder is prevalent in 4.1% of children aged 7-11 years old and in 3.9% of children aged 12-14 years old.
