Suggestions on Rett’s Disorder

Listed are some suggestions to help alleviate RS symptoms:

  • Management of gastrointestinal complaints (reflux, constipation) by providing food rich in fiber.
  • Always give a well-balanced diet to counter nutritional (poor weight gain) issues.
  • Calcium rich foods will help in strengthening bones which will protect them from fractures. (since RS patients often fall over)
  • Practice speech therapy to improve the patient's communication skills, especially with augmentative communication strategies.
  • Practice muscle movements through physical therapy to soften rigidity.
  • Following sleep aids or sleep hygiene to prevent insomnia or other sleep disorders.
  • Parental counseling.
  • Joining a support group.
