Suggestions for Postpartum Depression

It is important to recognize the fact that postpartum depression can affect the child as it affects the mother. Mothers with postpartum depression are usually affected in their ability to take care of themselves and their child. Those affected should understand that they are not bad mothers because of their condition. However, they should immediately seek treatment since the condition can affect their functional ability to take care of their child with significant impact on the behavior and personality of the child if the condition is left untreated. Some of the significant effects seen in children with depressed mothers include the following: 11

  • Delay in cognitive development
  • Behavioral problems
  • Emotional problems
  • Social problems
  • Depression

Those affected with postpartum depression should avoid feeling guilty about their condition. There is treatment available to alleviate their symptoms, and seeking treatment immediately is the best thing to do.

There are ways to help oneself cope with postpartum depression such as:

  • Learn to talk about how you feel.
  • Find someone to help you with child care, doing errands, and housework in order to get enough rest and sleep.
  • Keep a diary to express your thoughts and feelings while keeping track of your progress of feeling better.
  • Try to find time for yourself even for a short period of time. Do something to help you relax and make you feel good about yourself.
  • Give credit to yourself as you accomplish something no matter how small or minor it is.
  • Always keep in mind that no one expects you to be a super mom.
  • Acknowledge your capability and ask for help when you need it.
  • Join a support group.
