Prevalence of Parkinson’s disease

  • Parkinsons disease is slightly less prevalent in the African-American community.
  • The average crude prevalence is estimated at being from 120-180 out of 100,000 among the Caucasian community.
  • The Parsi community in Mumbai, India suffers from particularly high rates of Parkinson's disease. 17
  • Only about five percent have an inherited form of the disease in the one million individuals in the US who live with Parkinson’s.
  • People with an affected first-degree relative, such as a parent or sibling, have a two-to-three fold increased risk of developing Parkinson's, as compared to the general population. To date, epidemiological research has identified rural living.18
