What Causes Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

The cause of narcissistic personality disorder remains to be unknown, but similar to other personality disorders the cause may involve complex factors that lead to the formation of narcissism. Clinicians believe that it may be rooted in a dysfunctional childhood and it persists throughout adulthood. Excessive pampering and too much attention given to a child may develop self-centeredness. Childhood abuse and neglect can also make a person develop the longing of being given enough attention that they direct such longing of making themselves feel more superior over others. Parents who trained their children to live with high expectations can lead to the development of being a perfectionist, which is one characteristic of a narcissistic personality disorder. Other causes of narcissistic personality disorder may also be attributed to genetics and psychobiology which is the relation between the brain and behavior and thinking.

Researchers have identified some hypothetical causative factors to narcissistic personality disorder as follow:

  • Oversensitive temperament at birth
  • Valued by parents as a means to regulate their self esteem
  • Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents
  • Unreliable and unpredictable care giving from parents
  • Excessive admiration not balanced with realistic feedback
  • Severe emotional abuse in childhood
  • Excessive praise for good behavior in childhood
  • Excessive criticisms for poor behavior in childhood
  • Excessive praising by parents from childhood
  • Learning manipulative behavior from parents

Narcissistic characteristic can be exacerbated upon the onset of aging with occupational, mental, and physical restrictions.
