What Kinds of Malingering Treatments are Available?

At this point there is no treatment for malingering since the condition is not considered by the American Psychiatric Association as a personality disorder. Persons who have the purposeful intention of faking their symptoms do not want to be cured. 7 Malingerers refuse to report any improvement with their symptoms and conditions and all forms of treatment may be administered without success.

The treatment for malingering will depend on the ability of the clinician to detect the disorder. Clinicians can have some cues as to the presence of malingering disorder, such as the possible financial reward, the patient has legal problems, the presence of antisocial personality disorder and once the patient is not cooperative during the evaluation. 8
