What are the Symptoms of Kleptomania?

The hallmark symptom of kleptomania is the irresistible compulsion to steal. 5 The kleptomaniac often has the tendency to throw away the items and valuables they stole, since their interest is more towards performing the act of stealing rather than looking at the value of the items they stole. This is a main distinguishable symptom of kleptomania from shoplifting (where there is a premeditated intention of stealing because of the monetary value of the items to be stolen).

Common symptoms manifested by kleptomaniacs include:

  • Inability to resist impulses to steal things that are of no personal value
  • The act of stealing is not in response to delusions, revenge, hallucinations, and anger
  • Feeling of relief, gratification, and pleasure when committing the act of stealing.
  • Increased tension prior to the theft
  • Lack of explanation about the theft such as the occurrence of another psychological disorder.
  • There is an impulse to steal without any planning of it.
  • After the act of stealing the person feels guilt
