What Causes Gender Identity Disorder?

The main cause of Gender Identity Disorder is not exactly known, however there are several common factors that are identified that could possibly harbor the development of transsexuality, transvestism, and homosexuality.

  • Genetics (chromosomal abnormalities)
  • Hormonal influences (during fetal and childhood development)
  • Environmental factors (such as parenting, child rearing and human bonding)

The occurrence of cross gender interest usually occurs between 2 to 4 years of age in children. Adult onset of homosexuality and transsexualism is during early and mid-adulthood, and is usually in concurrence with transvestic fetishism that involves a few stages in the development of Gender Identity Disorder.

The first stage, occurring in late adolescence and early adulthood, is a continuation of childhood- and early adolescence-onset transsexualism. Overt signs of Gender Identity Disorder appear in the later stages of the condition, with clinical presentation in early and mid-adulthood, usually following transvestism.
