What are the Symptoms of Drug Addiction?

The kind of symptoms manifested by a drug addict is basically dependent on which type of drugs they are addicted with. Drug addiction has general and specific characteristics to show as symptoms of their addiction:

General Symptoms

  • Inclination to maintain a supply of a specific drug
  • The urge of needing a drug regularly, and with increasing frequency, in a day
  • Feeling of dependency to drugs in order to cope with problems
  • Failure in your attempt to stop using the drug
  • Doing things you do not normally do, such as stealing, to provide a means of buying the drugs at any cost.
  • Placing one self or others in physical harm once under the drug influence.

Symptoms from Depressant Drugs

  • Slurred speech
  • Confusion
  • Lack of coordination
  • Drowsiness
  • Impaired memory
  • Dizziness
  • Decreased blood pressure and slowed breathing
  • Depression

Symptoms from Stimulant Drugs

  • Rapid speech
  • Euphoria
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Decreased appetite
  • Depression as the drug begins to wear off
  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss
  • Nasal congestion and mucous membrane damage on the nose when snorting drugs
  • Paranoia
  • Increased blood pressure and rapid breathing

Symptoms from Opioids

  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Sedation
  • Reduced pain sensitivity
  • Confusion
  • Needle marks when the person is injecting drugs
  • Slowed breathing

There are also common signs and symptoms manifested in teenagers who may be suspected to be drug addicts. They will likely show poor performance in school and may show apathy and listlessness. Some adolescents will also show lack of interest with proper grooming and may often exhibit an exaggerated impulse to protect their privacy from family members. They may also show unreasonable need for money, which they need to sustain their needs to buy the drugs.
