What Causes Drug Addiction?

It is highly empirical to identify the possible causes of drug abuse in order to significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming an addict to a specific drug. One becomes a drug addict overtime, during the long term use of the drug, or during the course of experimentation.

There are numerous possible causes of drug addiction/substance abuse such as the following:

Drug Causing Addiction:

The most common drugs that promote addiction are the prescription and over the counter drugs, as well as the illegal drugs that are intended to promote drug addiction. The following are groups of drugs identified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine that can promote substance abuse and addiction to drugs.

Opiates and Opioid Analgesics

  • Fully synthetic opioid: Fentanyl, Methadone, Meperidine and Pethidine
  • Morphine and Codeine
  • Heroin, Hydromorphone, Hydrocodone and Oxycodone

Sedatives and Hypnotics

  • Barbiturates
  • Alcohol
  • Mathaqualone and other related sedative-hypnotics such as Quinazolinone
  • Benzodiazepines such as Temazepam, Alprazolam, Nimetazepam and Clonazepam

  • Cocaine
  • Caffeine
  • Amphetamine and Methamphetamine
  • Nicotine

Prescription drug abuse often occurs when the drug prescribed is used inappropriately. While prescription drugs have their own beneficial effects medically and psychologically, they can also impose problems that can lead to substance abuse when used “off label”. 3

The cause of drug addiction may be brought about by a number of causes with variable reasons. One powerful cause of addiction to drugs is the inability of an individual to obtain relief from mental, psychological, or physical pains. Individuals who do not get enough self and outside support to help them handle stress, depression, and loneliness are highly susceptible to develop addiction to drugs as a tempting way to help them cope.

The following are some of the numerous risk factors that can cause drug addiction:

  1. History of mental illness
  2. Family history of addiction
  3. Peer pressure
  4. Untreated physical pain
  5. Personality/behavioral problems
  6. Genetics
  7. Exposure to some drugs that can highly promote dependency to drugs such as heroin and cocaine.
