Statistics on Borderline Personality Disorder

  • There is approximately 2% prevalence rate of emotionally unstable (borderline) personality disorder in which 10% are seen as outpatients and 20% as psychiatric inpatients. 12
  • Borderline personality disorder is more common in females at about 75% more than males.
  • About 50% to 70% of psychiatric inpatients with BPD are drug abusers or alcohol dependents. 13
  • Substance abuse is a common problem in BPD, whether due to impulsivity or as a coping mechanism.
  • Borderline personality disorder is prevalent in young women at 3:1 ratio according to the DSM-IV-TR 14 but the reasons behind this are unclear. 15
