How is Bipolar Disorder Diagnosed?

Mania and depression are the common symptoms that help in establishing the diagnosis for bipolar disorder. If three or more of the symptoms of mania stated above happen almost every day, most of the day for a week or so, a manic episode is diagnosed. 3 On the other hand, if there are 5 or more of the above symptoms for depression are present and continue throughout the day and happen almost every day for 2 or more, a depressive episode is diagnosed.
