What Kinds of Binge Eating Disorder Treatments are Available?

The treatment for binge eating disorder focuses on binge eating, compulsivity with food, an inability to control food intake, and the use of food as a method of coping with anxieties and other underlying issues. Of important note with respect to treating binge eating disorder is that the subject of weight loss is a very sensitive issue—it is usually not considered a therapy goal for fear of giving the impression of having weight prejudices or making the disorder worse (i.e. having it develop into anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa).

Some of the forms of psychotherapy for binge eating disorders are: 7

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This form of therapy is focused on normalizing eating, adopting healthier eating patterns and lifestyles, loosening the connection between self-esteem and body shape/weight, having collaborative goals for change and self-acceptance, providing education and healthy lifestyle counseling, self-monitoring strategies, behavioral and cognitive tools, experiential learning, and relapse prevention.

Interpersonal Therapy

This therapy helps individuals identify interpersonal problem areas which are closely linked to the maintenance of the binge eating by analyzing the interpersonal history and context of the binge-eating episodes.

Dialectic Behavior Therapy

This involves developing mindfulness skills, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal management strategies.

Behavioral Weight Control Treatment

This is frequently used with obese binge-eaters, with emphasis on healthy life-style change, low-calorie diet, helping individuals maintain long-term remission of binge-eating

Some research has been conducted on combining therapy with drug treatments with the aim of weight loss for obese people (See Findings on binge eating disorder).
