What Causes Avoidant Personality Disorder?

The cause of avoidant personality disorder is still unknown, but it can be a result of different factors or a combination of factors such as social, genetic, or psychological.

Some who have been diagnosed with this kind of disorder have had a traumatic experience when they were a child. They either suffered from parental criticism or rejection from society. They want to receive affection from their parents, but their wanting of a relationship with their rejecting parents in the long-run develops into isolation as their defense mechanism since they don’t want to repeat criticism and rejection again. 4

The avoidant personality disorder may be inherited since it is associated with temperamental factors characterized by behavioral inhibition such as shyness, fearful, and being reserved in new or different situations. 5

It can be assumed that genetic factors can cause APD and social phobia because recent studies on Norwegian young adult’s shows that there is a 35% chance that APD could be a result genetically while 83% are related to other personality disorders 6
