What Causes Anxiety Disorder NOS?

The causes of anxiety disorder NOS include anxiety symptoms or phobic avoidance that does not meet the general criteria for any of the specific anxiety disorders. White coat hypertension, headache, hyperventilation and amenorrhea are some of the medical conditions that can cause anxiety disorder NOS. 4

All types of anxiety disorders share a common symptom of intense fear and anxiety which are most likely caused by a combination of psychological, biological and stressful factors. 5 The following are some possible causes of anxiety disorder NOS:

  • Family history of anxiety disorder
  • Stressful events
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Substance abuse
  • Medication
  • Medical conditions
  • Psychiatric disorder
  • Biological factors such as:
    • Genetics
    • Abnormality in brain chemistry and activity
