What are the Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa?

The cultural standards of beauty have made dieting and desiring to become thin a widespread phenomenon. It is important, then, to determine whether one’s practices and beliefs are healthy or self-destructive. Anorexia nervosa is an extreme set of behaviors and beliefs that may start out as a coping mechanism to seek attention and approval, or to feel numb about certain emotional pains and exert some control over one’s life. That is when it may become dangerous, as it can lead to serious medical problems and even death. The telltale signs of anorexia nervosa are:

  • Setting weight standards below the healthy minimum weight for oneself
  • Intense fear of gaining weight
  • Starving one self to induce weight loss (and other unhealthy dieting practices such as inducing vomiting, misusing laxatives, etc.)
  • Obsessing about controlling one’s food intake
  • Seeing oneself as “fat” even though one is objectively of normal weight, thin or underweight
  • Hyperactivity or over-exercising
  • Low feelings of self-worth
  • Imposing very strict or rigid rules on one’s eating behavior (such as very low calorie intake per day)
  • Feeling uncomfortable eating in public
  • Obsession with counting one’s calorie intake
  • Intense feelings of guilt if one has eaten beyond one’s calorie “rules”
  • Constantly weighing oneself (i.e. every day) then feeling depressed if one has gained a pound or has not lost a few pounds
  • Believing that being thin will solve all of one’s problems
