Suggestions for Anorexia Nervosa


  • Challenge the cultural standards of beauty set or imposed by the media
  • Define your own concept of beauty which includes strong inner and character traits and life principles
  • Find something you are good at and can be proud of (such as a form of art, an academic field, a certain skill) and develop some level of expertise in that area
  • Set manageable and attainable goals for self-growth (i.e. in your career, academics, personal life, spirituality, etc.)
  • Develop one’s social skills and stress-management skills
  • Give yourself permission to be imperfect
  • Seek out and choose friends who have high levels of self-acceptance and depth of character
  • Aim to increase one’s own level of self-acceptance
  • Find ways to increase one’s self-esteem and confidence in healthy ways
  • Find your own voice and value your own opinion
  • Express yourself through writing (i.e. journal writing, poetry, essays, etc.) or art
  • Aim for a healthy and sustainable lifestyle
  • Challenge and seek to change your negative perceptions and beliefs about yourself
  • Seek out a support group of people trying to recover or have recovered from the disorder
  • Seek medical attention
  • Seek some form of therapy to identify the cause or causes of the disorder and to ensure recovery
