What Kinds of Alzheimer’s Disease Treatments are Available?

Although there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease, some medical treatments have been used to manage or alleviate the symptoms and improve the quality of life of the affected persons.

USA Today has listed several drug treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease which can boost memory, but does not stop the disease—they are labeled according to their known medical effects and also if they are FDA approved or not. It is important that people consult with their doctor before taking such treatments, since many will have some side effects.

While a lot of research is being undertaken to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, others have focused on how to manage the symptoms and maintain the person’s quality of life through effective care giving or care partnering practices.

Since there is no cure for the disease yet, it is important that persons suffering from Alzheimer’s disease be cared for properly, as they will need different levels of care given as the disease progresses. This will entail some discussion and planning with family members about their care giving options—with the aim of finding the best option for them, one that is economically and emotionally sustainable, humane, and respectful of the patient’s rights.
